Kavanagh Research Lab

Exploring molecular electrocatalysis, bioelectrochemistry and electrochemical interfaces to drive innovation in sustainable energy technologies, electrochemical sensing, and synthetic electrochemistry at Queen’s University Belfast.

About Our Lab

Welcome to the Kavanagh Research Lab at Queens University Belfast, based in the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering.

Our research spans a broad range of electrochemical science with a particular focus on molecular electrocatalysis. We investigate fundamental and applied aspects of electron transfer reactions at interfaces, working across disciplines to address challenges in sustainable energy conversion, chemical synthesis, sensing technologies, and materials science.

While our primary expertise lies in developing new and improved molecular electrocatalysts for reactions relevant to global sustainability, our work encompasses diverse electrochemical systems and methodologies. We employ an integrated approach combining electrochemical techniques, advanced spectroscopy, and computational chemistry to understand reaction mechanisms and design efficient electrochemical systems for a variety of applications.
